The Peschan'sk skarn iron deposit is located to the south of Serov in the Yekaterinburg (ex-Sverdlovsk) district, east of the Urals Mountains, in Russia.

The deposit is divided into four separate sectors, occurring on the western margin of the Peschan'sk diorite massif, which is in turn the north-western section of a larger intrusive complex. The intrusives, which are assumed to be of Permo-Carboniferous age, cut lower Devonian sedimentary and volcano-sedimentary rocks. The Devonian sequence comprises limestone at the base, overlain by tuffaceous sandstone, tuffaceous shale and tuffs of andesitic porphyry with bands of limestone. In the upper sections of the succession there are hornblende-plagioclase porphyries, and their tuffs, with subordinate tuffaceous sandstone (Smirnov, 1977).

The lower Devonian sedimentary and volcano-sedimentary sequence dips gently at 5 to 50°, cut by the steep contact with the diorite intrusion. Numerous mafic dykes cut both the intrusive and the layered Devonian sequence, which have been strongly disrupted by block faulting (Smirnov, 1977).

Seventeen ore segregations have been outlined, six of which embody the mineable reserves. The remainder are too small to exploit. The principal bodies are several hundred metres in length and width, with thicknesses of 40 to 80 m. The ore blocks are surrounded by an aureole of strong metasomatic alteration, comprising skarn development over widths of 30 to 120 m, occasionally 200 to 500 m. Albitisation has been developed in the volcanogenic rocks, accompanied by epidotisation, chloritisation and carbonatisation. Epidosites are usually restricted to fault zones, with minor associated veinlets of Cu-sulphides (Smirnov, 1977).

The ore comprises magnetite, sulphide-magnetite and skarn-magnetite varieties. The average content varies from 48.5 to 54% Fe; 2 to 3% S; and 0.037% P. One of the four subdivisions, the Western Peschan'sk, contains chalcopyrite and has an average grade of 0.61% Cu. The magnetite reserves at Peschan'sk were originally around 200Mt (Smirnov, 1977).
