The Donimalai iron deposit is approximately 200 km ENE of the Arabian Sea port of Marmagoa (340 km by rail) and is located in northern Karnataka State of western India.

The iron ores are hosted by the Neoarchaean Dharwar Supergroup supracrustal rocks which overlie and are infolded into a Mesoarchaean basement in the Western Dharwar craton.

For a summary of the geology of the Western Dharwar craton and the Dharwar Supergroup see the separate  Kudremukh   record.

Donimalai exploits hematite enriched ores in banded iron formation and is operated by the National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd at a rate of 4 Mt pa (2005) of lump and fines ore.

Resource and reserve figures and estimates from a variety of sources include:

    108 Mt @ >65% Fe - original mining reserve, 1977,
    31.7 Mt @ >65% Fe - remaining reserve, 2005.

The most recent source geological information used to prepare this decription was dated: 2006.
