On returning to the Lae helicopter pad from Wafi-Golpu, the group had collected their baggage from the hotel and been transported to Nadzad where their charter aircraft awaited to take them to Port Moresby to overnight. On the following morning they departed Port Moresby on a joint Qantas-Air Nuiguini flight to Cairns in north Queensland. From Cairns, they flew 300 km south on a domestic flight to Townsville where they collected a hire van to drive the remaining 140 km to Charters Towers to overnight.
