Travel across China  -  The long distances between mines distributed over an interval of around 1800 km of eastern China required considerable travel.  This involved scheduled airline flights between the major cities - Beijing, Yantai, Xi'an and Xiamen.  Surface travel out from these cities for periods of 2 to 5 hours was in modern air conditioned buses which allowed ample room for participants to spread out and to be comfortable, and followed fast expressways, with the latter part of each journey usually on main and secondary roads through the coutryside, towns and villages to the mines being visited.
