Mining at Urucum.
Left: The iron mine removes the top 10 to 30 m below surface following the 10 to 30° dipping iron formation that has been enriched by the removal of gangue. Right: The lower of the iron formations are rich in manganese and are mined by underground room and pillar methods. This image is in the early near surface workings. The group also visited the current deeper stopes.
