Morning tea at the Noumea Seminar, New Caledonia.
The Module 1B, Southwest Pacific Laterites Tour Group had assembled at Sydney International Airport on the morning of Sunday 28 May to board a flight to Noumea, New Caledonia, arriving in the early afternoon. The remainder of the day was at leisure, before the introductory meeting in the evening.
The next morning started with a seminar on the "geology, nickel deposits and mining industry of New Caledonia", presented by Services des Mines et de l'Energie, New Caledonia, BRGM, and industry experts (the principal of which are pictured above).

After a very French lunch, the group was taken to visit the relatively small, but high grade SMGM Tonouta lateritic nickel mine, an example of one of the 'small mines' of the island.
