The Nizhny Tagil (Nizhnetagil) PGE deposit, is located within the Ural Platinum Belt of the northern Ural Mountains in the Russian Federation (#Location: 57° 54' 3"N, 59° 54' 35"E).

The dunite massif at Nizhny Tagil is the largest intrusive of its type in the Urals, being around 12 km long and 6.5 km wide at its broadest. It is situated along the western border of a larger, essentially gabbroic mass. The dunite massif consists of a central core of dunite with a band of serpentinite along its western flank only. These phases are surrounded by a narrow pyroxenite rim, composed of clinopyroxene. A transitional wehrlite is developed between the dunite and pyroxenite in places. The pyroxenite, in turn, passes into gabbro via a transitional feldspathic pyroxenite, locally referred to as a 'tiliate'. In the east, the gabbro grades into diorite, quartz-diorite and then granite. The contacts between all of these phases are gradational (von Gruenewaldt, 1987).

The platinum mineralisation is closely associated with irregular pods, lenses, schlieren and branching veins of disseminated and massive chromite within the dunite (Smirnov, 1977). No systematic distribution of chromite in the dunite has been recognised, nor are all chromites platiniferous. It also appears that the platiniferous chromites post-date the crystallisation of the dunite. This is supported by the occurrence of chromite within brecciated dunite, set in a matrix of massive chromite, and veins of chromite within the dunite (von Gruenewaldt, 1987).

The two major PGE minerals in the deposits are Pt-Fe alloys and platiridium, which occur together with a large variety of other PGE alloys, while extremely enriched chromite accounts for 88% of the PGE. Osmium and ruthenium are strictly subordinate (von Gruenewaldt, 1987).
