The low grade Kara Gaily open pit Pb-Zn-barite deposit is in Kazakhstan, approximately 200 km ESE of Karaganda.
Mining commenced in 1952, and by 1992 only 8 Mt of ore remained at a grade of approximately 1.5% Pb, 1.5% Zn, 40% BaSO4, with associated Cu, Ag and Au. The deposit appears to be hosted by a Carboniferous volcano-sedimentary sequence. A number of prospects with similar grades are indicated in the surrounding district.
The most recent source geological information used to prepare this decription was dated: 1996.
