The Uchaly, Uchalin or Uchalinskoye massive and stringer-disseminated sulphide Cu-Zn deposit is located 150 km north of Magnitogorsk in the central Urals Mountains of Russia (#Location: 54° 18' 31"N, 59° 25' 21"E).

For details of the regional setting, see the Regional Setting section of the 50 Let Oktyabrya record.

Two groups of deposits are known, the "Old" Uchaly discovered in the early 1900s and the blind "New" Uchaly, or Novouchalinskoe, found by drilling below 625 m os cover in 1986 (Laznicka 2010).

The deposit is hosted by Early to Middle Devonian (Eifelian to Emsian) felsic and mafic volcanics of the Karamalytash Formation.

Mineralisation occurs as tabular, stratabound, zoned massive Cu, Cu-Zn and pyrite rich sulphides with stringer-disseminated pyrite-chalcopyrite in the quartz-chlorite-sericite altered footwall. The tabular orebodies are zoned from the base upwards, from banded pyrite → equigranular chalcopyrite and pyrite → thin-banded chalcopyite-sphalerite-pyrite → metacolloform, banded and breccia chalcopyrite-sphalerite-pyrite-minor galena (Laznicka 2010).

The main ore minerals are pyrite (60-90%), sphalerite (up to 25%), chalcopyrite (0.1-10%); tennantite, galena and magnetite, with accessory pyrrhotite, melnikovite, arsenopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, altaite, hessite, calaverite, coloradoite, tellurobismuthite, tetradymite, native tellurium, stannoidite, mawsonite, cinnabar, rutile and native gold.

Gangue and alteration minerals include quartz, sericite, calcite, barite, anhydrite, siderite, aragonite, tourmaline, epidote, zoisite and garnet.

The deposit is quoted at containing 113 Mt @ 1.08% Cu, 0.1% Pb, 3.7% Zn, 1.26 g/t Au, 18 g/t Ag. The total mineralisation is estimated to have been 230 Mt while, 13 Mt of oxide ore at 10 g/t Au is also recorded.

Mining has been principally by open pit with around 30% extracted by underground operations.
