The uranium deposits of the Vitim, or Vitimsky district are located on the Vitim plateau, 60 km south of the settlement of Bagdarin, 250 km east of Lake Baikal and 200 km north of Chita in the Buryat Republic of Siberia, Russia. Khiagda (Khiagdinskoe) is the largest of the more than 8 known deposits, which also include the Verkhne - Imskoye group and Tetrachskoye.
The palaeo-river channel fill sediments which host uranium mineralisation of the Vitim District overlie a basement of late folded and thrust faulted Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic plutonic igneous and metamorphic rocks to the east of Lake Baikal. These rocks form a large, north-east oriented, SW opening embayment, bounded to the NW and NE by the Siberian Craton and to the SE by the Stanavoy Shield.
The host erosional palaeo-channels are at depths of 150-200 m or more, overlain by flows of the Vitim Basalt Field which were deposited within the Baikal Rift System, a zone of active lithospheric extension. The 16 to 6 Ma Vitim Volcanic Field lies approximately 200 km east of the rift axis and consists of 5000 sq. km of melanephelinites, basanites, alkali and tholeiitic basalts, and minor nephelinites.
The individual ore bearing palaeovalleys are spaced at 3 to 5, up to 10 km apart. Each palaeovalley usually contains one ribbon-like ore deposit of up to a hundred metres in width and a kilometre in length, generally containing 1000 to 3000 t U3O8 at an average ore grade of 0.06% U3O8.
At least 8 uranium deposits have been identified within the district, the largest of which is exploited by the Khiagdinskoe ISL (in situ leach) project which comprises four contiguous paleovalleys. Khiagda is a complex uranium-scandium-rare earth accumulation, while the Verkhne - Imskoye group are uranium deposits.
Khiagdinskoe contains an estimated 14 000 tonnes of U3O8 at an average ore grade of 0.06% U3O8, plus 120 t of scandium and 6000 t of Rare Eath Elements, as well as a potential 36 000 tonnes of U3O8 at an average ore grade of 0.06% U3O8 at a lower (C2) resource classification.
Verkhne - Imskoye has a total resource (C1+C2) of approximately 28 000 tonnes of U3O8.
