The McDermitt mine has been the most important Mercury producer in the Americas during the twentieth century having yielded 270 000 flasks to 1988.

The deposit is located on the eastern margin of the Middle Miocene McDermitt Caldera complex in north-western Nevada, USA.   The Aurora uranium occurrence is 15 km NW of McDermitt on the northern margin of the same caldera complex, as are a number of other Hg and U occurrences.   A number of gold deposits including Hog Ranch and Sleeper are found in the same volcanic pile and may be related to the same hydrothermal system.
