The 50 sq. km early Cambrian Uktus platinum bearing stock like complex is located on the outskirts of Ekaterinburg ( Yekaterinburg ) in the central Urals of Russia.

Although the Uktus Complex is some 50 km south of the main Uralian Platinum Belt, it belongs to the same Uralian-Alaskan type platinum association.   While the complex appears to have been emplaced in the early Cambrian it underwent slow cooling, equilibration and deformation, followed by low grade metamorphism during the upper Silurian to Devonian.

The main constituents of the complex are dunite, clinopyroxenite, wherlite, olivine and amphibole gabbro, distributed in a concentric zoned structure, with dunite embedded within the wherlite-clinopyroxenite mass which passes outwards into gabbro.   The dunite is variably serpentinised and contains accessory chromite.   Olivine gabbro generally occurs interlayered with clinopyroxenite in the layered central part of the complex, while the amphibole gabbro is found as massive bodies in the central and southern parts of the massif.

The complex contains ubiquitous accessory chromite as euhedral and anhedral crystals, locally forming massive segregations irregularly distributed through the dunite as pods and schlieren about 0.5 to 3 cm thick and 15 to 30 cm long.   The PGE content of the complex is within the dunite cores, associated with the chromitites, with three different PGE populations, which correlate with differing chromitite compositions.

Uktus appears to represent a low grade proto-ore from which significant deposits such as Nizhny Tagil 100 km to the north may have been derived.
