The Winterveld, Montrose, Groothoek and Maandagshoek chromite deposits are located on the Eastern Lobe of the 2050 Ma Bushveld layered mafic complex in South Africa, NNW and west of Steelpoort. The section contains large resources and mines exploiting extensive reserves of Chromite.
For an outline of the setting, geology and distribution of mineralisation within the Bushveld Complex, see the Bushveld Complex overview record.
These mines exploit the Steelpoort Chromite Layer within the Lower Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex. See the Elandsdrift record for information on other chromite reefs worked in the complex.
For details of the Bushveld mineralisation, stratigraphy and chromite bearing reefs, see the Bushveld Complex record.
